Because the GBT couldn’t resolve spatial variations in the velocity dispersion or column density.  Resolving the former offers more information on the  problem of supersonic vs. subsonic dispersions, already discussed as key for star formation, and column density spatial variations probe whether there are structures along the line of sight—as indeed the authors find (the filament!)
